Lokalpedia, a portmanteau of lokal and encyclopedia, is an independent non-profit project dedicated to documenting the Philippines’ biocultural assets, particularly edible species of flora, fauna, and funga, along with the traditional knowledge, practices, and cultural values associated with their use. Rooted in a strong commitment to field-based research, the project emphasizes in situ documentation, recognizing that food biodiversity and heritage cannot be fully understood without directly engaging with the landscapes and communities where it continues to live and evolve.
Since its inception, Lokalpedia covered different regions in Philippine archipelago, collaborating with farmers, fisherfolk, food artisans, vendors, elders, Indigenous groups, and other culture bearers to record food sources, ingredient names, seasonal patterns, culinary applications, and ecological relationships. The project seeks to honor local systems of classification and everyday life ways, which are often overlooked in mainstream discourse. It incorporates oral histories, rituals, and lived experiences into a growing open-access library.
By centering grassroots knowledge , Lokalpedia challenges extractive and colonial approaches to documentation. It promotes respectful knowledge-sharing, food sovereignty, and environmental sustainability. In a time of rapid change, Lokalpedia affirms that documenting foodways is not only about preservation but also about actively shaping a future where culture and biodiversity continue to thrive together.
John Sherwin Felix is a 29-year-old advocate for food biodiversity and heritage based in Quezon City, Philippines. At 23 years old, he began deliberately recording food traditions in his hometown of San Jose, Mindoro. What started with interviews with his mother, neighborhood elders, farmers, and market vendors eventually grew into a nationwide journey of discovery. From there, he launched Lokalpedia to preserve and share the country’s diverse food knowledge.
Before pursuing this path full time, John worked as an accounts manager in a public relations agency in Metro Manila. Choosing purpose over stability, he resigned from corporate life and committed his time and resources to documentation. Traveling across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, he has since immersed himself in communities — listening to stories, learning techniques, and gathering knowledge that would otherwise remain unrecorded.
